The Final Bath
Is there a greater act of lovingkindness?
Dr. Morton Jay Stanley. Mort. Dad. 1931-2019.
My Dad was on home peritoneal dialysis for a few years. In late December, he took me aside.
He said, “I’m going to end my dialysis.'“
“I’ll miss you.”
He said, “You’ll do okay.”
“Yeah, well, I had a good teacher.”
He said, “I’m tired waking up, feeling like shit, and knowing I’m not gonna feel any better. This is no way to live.”
My father died on Jan. 14, 2019. On the 12th, he looked at me and said, "I need a shower. Gimme a hand." So, I did. I wrote this shortly after his death.
Why not share? It’d be a big help. Thanks.
